Department of Mathematics and Science Teaching

Mathematics Education Department

About the Program

The Department of Mathematics Education, one of the 24 departments at the Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education, was opened in the 1928-1929 academic year.  It continued to offer a 2-year education to pre-service mathematics teachers until 1967-1968 education year and a 3-year education until 1978-1979 education year. The length of the program was extended to 4 years in 1979. It was initially a program of the Science Education Department, but it was restructured as a unified department in 1994, and became the Department Mathematics Education.  It was affiliated with Selçuk University until 2008. Then, the Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education was connected to Konya University, which is named as Necmettin Erbakan University later, and the department started to operate a part of Necmettin Erbakan University. In this process, the department kept educating pre-service mathematics teachers.
While the department of mathematics education trained pre-service teachers of secondary and high schools under a single program until 1998, it trained preservice teachers under two programs after 1998:  High school mathematics teachers (5-year program) and Elementary school mathematics teacher (4-year program). Then, the department of Mathematics education was divided into two different departments in 2007:  the Department of Elementary Mathematics Education and the Department of Secondary Mathematics Education. These academic units were divided into as Elementary Mathematics Teaching and Mathematics Teaching Programs within Department of Mathematics Education in 2018. In addition to the undergraduate program of the department, there are also graduate programs (master's and doctorate programs with thesis).
